25 February 1990 - Rear Admiral (LH) David E. Ozvat

The present Commandant of the Ohio Naval Militia, Rear Admiral David E. Ozvat served for two years active duty in the U.S. Navy and saw duty onboard the destroyer USS GLENNON (DD 840). While the ship was deployed off the coast of Vietnam, then LT(JG) Ozvat served as the Division Officer for the Combat Information Center, and was awarded the Combat Action Ribbon and Vietnam Service Medal for his service during the Conflict in Southeast Asia.

Admiral Ozvat was commissioned into the Ohio Naval Militia in 1979 as a Lieutenant, and rose through the ranks to be appointed as the ONM's fourth Commandant in February, 1990.

As Rear Admiral Ozvat continues with more than fifteen years of service as our commandant, the leadership that he demonstrates will continue to improve the readiness of the command, the morale of the personnel, and the dedication to duty that has become a byword of the Ohio Naval Militia.

Admiral Ozvat has a wife, Lucy and two adult children.

The Ohio Naval Militia is an organized, unarmed, all volunteer unit. Officers and enlisted members serve under the direction of the Governor and the Adjutant General's Department of the State of Ohio, and are governed by Ohio Revised Code sections 5920.1 and 5921.0. Being a naval-type unit, the rank structure, uniforms, customs, etc. are patterned after that of the U.S. Navy. The ONM is divided into various departments, such as Operations, Training, Engineering, Mission Support, etc.
